Shin pain is one of the most common problems affecting runners. There are a number of injuries that occur in the shin and just about any injury below the knee can be referred to as shin splints.
These injuries commonly include: tendonopathy, periostitis, stress reactions or fracture and compartment syndrome (more recently referred to as chronic exertional overload syndrome). These are overuse injuries, usually caused by a combination of poor biomechanics, technique and training errors.
